Autumn Nor’easter Bathers Philadelphia with Heavy Rain and Damaging Winds

PHILADELPHIA — A powerful autumn nor’easter tracking along the Mid-Atlantic coast brought persistent rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding across Philadelphia and the surrounding Delaware Valley over the weekend.
According to storm summary reports from the NOAA/NWS Weather Prediction Center, the storm system centered off the New Jersey coast funneled broad rainbands across Southeastern Pennsylvania. Regional rainfall totals recorded 2.62 inches in Bristol (Bucks County), 2.32 inches in Berwyn (Chester County), 2.24 inches in Hatboro, and 2.05 inches in Wayne (Montgomery County), with similar totals spanning the metro area.
Persistent northeasterly winds reaching gusts of 40 to 45 mph, combined with ground already saturated from midweek precipitation, resulted in downed tree branches and scattered power outages affecting thousands of regional utility customers.
Travel across the metropolitan area saw widespread disruptions. Major thoroughfares including Interstate 95 and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) experienced severe ponding and standing water, forcing commuters to slow down. In Center City, traffic detours linked to weekend street closures compounded delays for SEPTA riders, with several primary bus routes—including Routes 2, 7, 32, 33, 38, 43, 48, and 49—operating on temporary detours. Regional Rail services out of 30th Street Station also experienced minor schedule delays.
The wet conditions prompted the cancellation or postponement of outdoor youth sports games, community gatherings, and seasonal outdoor activities throughout the Delaware Valley. Municipal emergency management officials advised residents to secure outdoor property and refrain from driving through flooded roadways.
The storm system is expected to weaken and move farther offshore heading into early next week, bringing a transition to drier conditions and seasonal fall temperatures in the 70s by mid-week.
