American Airlines Adds Nonstop Philadelphia to Porto Flights
American Airlines will begin daily nonstop flights between Philadelphia International Airport and Porto, Portugal, on March 28, 2027, giving the region its first-ever direct link to Portugal’s second-largest city.
The seasonal summer route will be flown with the Airbus A321XLR, the long-range narrowbody American debuted in December 2025. The smaller jet lets the airline serve secondary European markets that cannot fill a widebody, according to aviation analysts.
Porto is one of three new European routes from Philadelphia, along with Vienna starting May 6 and Reykjavik on May 27, all launching in 2027. Tickets are already on sale, according to PhillyVoice.
“Porto and Vienna have never been served from PHL and Reykjavik is back for the first time since the pandemic,” said Tracy Borda, the airport’s interim CEO, in a statement.
The additions will bring American’s Philadelphia network to 21 European destinations in summer 2027, cementing the airport’s role as the carrier’s primary transatlantic gateway. American carried more than 20 million passengers through Philadelphia in 2025, making it the airport’s largest airline.
“That aircraft is a game changer, allowing American to add unique international markets not traditionally served by widebody planes,” Borda said of the A321XLR.
The move follows record demand for American’s existing Philadelphia to Lisbon service, which flies year-round. Porto will be the only scheduled nonstop between the two cities.
For Philadelphia-area travelers and the region’s Portuguese-American families, the new route opens a direct door to northern Portugal’s wine country and historic cities.
