The Philly School Calendar Dates Parents Need Before the Holidays
PHILADELPHIA — With Term 1 interim reports landing Sept. 29, Philadelphia families are entering a stretch of the school calendar dotted with days when students stay home, starting with a staff development day on Oct. 18.
The date parents most need is Nov. 16. That is when Term 1 report-card conferences take place, and the district schedules conference days as full closures for students while teachers meet with families, according to a Philadelphia Weekly guide to the 2026-27 calendar published Oct. 7.
The pattern repeats each term. Term 2 interim reports arrive Dec. 10 with conferences Jan. 29. Term 3 interim reports come Feb. 25 with conferences April 16. Term 4 interim reports go out May 6, with the year then wrapping into the graduation window instead of a standard conference day.
Staff development days are scattered through the fall and winter, including Aug. 17-21, Sept. 9, Oct. 18 and Jan. 15. Students have no school on those days, though buildings are not fully closed, so families should not count on drop-off.
Each of the three academic terms now ends with a full-day report card conference instead of two half-day conferences, and students are off on those days.
The guide’s rule of thumb is to treat the interim date as the cue to check in with a teacher proactively rather than waiting for the conference day to learn something is off.
Religious and cultural observances such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Diwali are flagged as important dates even when they do not close schools, which can explain a half-empty hallway. Nov. 25, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, is a full day off for students.
Calendars can shift with weather or policy changes. The district advises families to verify dates against the official academic calendar before booking travel or requesting time off.
