Chrysanthemums, Carmina Burana and a 5K With Dogs Fill the Region’s Weekend

The Philadelphia region’s weekend is a three-day overlap of flowers, music, food and dogs. From Friday through Sunday, fall events unfold across gardens, concert halls, streets and expo halls.
In Gardens and on the Streets
At Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Chester County, the Chrysanthemum Festival is in full swing. The Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum display runs through Nov. 15. This weekend, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Illuminated Fountain Performances take place for the last time this season. Friday’s performance, titled “Symphony of Horror,” pairs scenes from the classic film Nosferatu with live organ music.
On Saturday, Rose Tree Park in Delaware County hosts an event for dogs and their people. Bark in the Park, presented by Providence Animal Center, marks its 21st year. A dog-friendly 5K starts at 10 a.m., followed by a 1-mile walk at 11:15, with an adoption event held alongside. Former TV meteorologist Cecily Tynan will also attend.
On Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m., Beer and Brass takes place at the Duportail House in Chesterbrook. It is a fundraiser for the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, with music by the Mansfield Brass Quintet.
In Philadelphia, a street food festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Stateside Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave.
On Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, Delaware County, holds its fall festival. Thirty artists take part, with musical performances and pumpkin painting. At the same venue, the pastel exhibition “Visions in Pastels” opens Saturday and runs through Nov. 25.
On Stage and at the Expo Hall
The Philadelphia Orchestra performs “Carmina Burana” Friday through Sunday in Marian Anderson Hall at the Kimmel Center. It is a large-scale work that fills the stage with chorus and orchestra, running all weekend.
At the Zellerbach Theatre at the University of Pennsylvania, Ballets Jazz Montréal takes the stage Friday and Saturday, dancing to the music of Leonard Cohen.
At the Lansdowne Theater in Delaware County, country singer Ashley McBryde performs on Saturday.
The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Montgomery County, is busy all weekend as well. The Pennsylvania Chocolate and Coffee Festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Guild of Craftsmen Fall Fine Fair and the Philly Non-Sports Card Show are also held Saturday and Sunday. The Great Junk Hunt runs Friday and Saturday.
If the weather cooperates, a natural route opens the weekend with Friday night’s garden fountains and organ, passes through Saturday’s dog event and the expo halls, and closes with Sunday afternoon’s fall festival. With performances, exhibitions and street food, no day on the Philadelphia region’s calendar this weekend is empty.
