Fed Goes Quiet as Prediction Markets Price 84 Percent Odds of an October Hold

The Federal Reserve has entered its blackout period ahead of the October 27 and 28 policy meeting. No Fed official will speak publicly until the decision is announced, a quiet stretch that usually lasts about a week before each meeting.

Prediction markets are pricing in a pause. Traders on Kalshi and Polymarket give an October rate hold odds of about 84 to 87 percent, with roughly 15 percent odds of a 25-basis-point hike and about 1 percent odds of a cut, according to pricing tracked by DeFi Rate and noted by Morningstar.

The pricing marks a sharp reversal. After the Fed raised rates in September to a range of 3.75 percent to 4 percent, its first rate hike in more than three years, traders at one point put the odds of another October move as high as 70 percent. That faded after New York Fed President John Williams said there was no urgency to raise again immediately.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at an International Monetary Fund event in Bangkok, declined to signal the next move. “I don’t believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year,” he said.

The calm at October has shifted attention to December. Prediction markets price about a 79 percent chance of a rate hike at the December 9 meeting, which would lift the benchmark range to 4 percent to 4.25 percent.

For households, a hold in October would mean no immediate change in the prime-based rates that drive credit cards, home equity lines of credit, and adjustable loans. Fixed mortgages follow bond yields rather than the Fed directly, but those yields also move on the Fed’s expected path.

One caution runs through all of this. Prediction-market odds measure the bets of traders, not the decisions of the central bank. Hot inflation prints, including September consumer prices at 3.7 percent year over year, could reopen the hike debate before October 28. These odds are a snapshot of sentiment that can change by the hour.
