Port of Philadelphia Lands $837 Million in Largest Expansion Ever

Gov. Josh Shapiro joined Mayor Cherelle Parker and elected leaders on Tuesday to announce $837 million for the Port of Philadelphia, the largest expansion in the port’s history.

The package combines $371.5 million from the Shapiro administration, at least $200 million from the private sector and $266 million in federal support.

The money is expected to create more than 6,000 jobs and generate $45 million in state and local taxes. Container capacity would grow 122 percent and auto capacity 18 percent across port facilities.

“This announcement is going to kickstart a new era for growth here at the port,” Shapiro said. “The kind of growth we have not seen for decades.”

“It is a super big deal for the city of Philadelphia,” Parker said.

The port has a strong base to build on. For three straight years it has ranked as the most productive container port in the United States, according to the Container Port Productivity Index published by the World Bank and S&P. Last year it was the only American port in the index’s global top 50, ranking 48th worldwide and second in North America.

In 2025 the port supported more than 8,000 jobs and contributed nearly $1.2 billion in economic output across Pennsylvania, according to the Shapiro administration.

The expansion cements the waterfront’s role as one of the region’s biggest economic engines, with construction and new capacity expected to ripple across the commonwealth.
