School Bus Collides With Sedan and Flips in Delaware County, Injuring Four Students

A school bus collided with a sedan and flipped on its side Wednesday morning in Newtown Township, Delaware County, sending four students to the hospital, according to KYW Newsradio.

The crash happened at 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Boot Road and West Chester Pike. Marple Newtown School District Bus 100 was turning from Boot Road onto West Chester Pike when it was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound, school officials said.

The impact caused the bus to overturn onto its passenger side. The bus was carrying four Paxon Hollow Middle School students, a school aide and the driver.

All four students were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, according to Marple Newtown School District Superintendent Tina Kane. The district did not report injuries to the bus driver or the aide.

The condition of the driver of the other vehicle was not immediately known, Kane said. A damaged sedan could be seen near the bus at the roadside.

Newtown Township police closed the area around the crash for much of the morning, and travelers were warned of heavy traffic before the roadway reopened.

In a statement Wednesday, Kane thanked emergency responders and district staff who rushed to help. She said she was especially grateful to an elementary principal, a former teacher and a former assistant, all of whom knew the students and went to the scene to comfort and support them.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
