Two Free October Gatherings Worth a Trip to Center City and Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA — Two free outdoor events anchor the second half of October in Philadelphia, one a shopping weekend at City Hall and the other an evening of music and fireworks in the park. Both are free to attend, run rain or shine, and sit within easy reach of Center City transit.

The Made in Philadelphia Fall Market returns to Dilworth Park, on the west side of City Hall at 1 S. 15th St., for its 10th anniversary from Friday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 11. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. More than 80 vendors from Philadelphia and the surrounding region will sell art, jewelry, clothing, home goods, specialty foods and handmade holiday gifts.

The market’s organizers, the team behind Christmas Village in Philadelphia, are running the event in partnership with the Center City District, according to PhillyVoice. Saturday, Oct. 10, brings a special anniversary activation with live music, extra lounge seating and interactive activities. Two CityPickle pickleball courts will be available at Dilworth Park during the weekend, with reservations offered separately, and PhillyVoice reported that free apple cider pressing is planned for Saturday while supplies last.

Food vendors confirmed for the weekend include Bacon on a Stick, known for thick-cut bacon skewers with dipping glazes, and Husky Jawn Street Corn, along with honey from the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild. The vendor mix also features Philly-inspired art, upcycled clothing, vintage jewelry, children’s clothing and a Philadelphia-themed tarot deck. The event is family friendly and welcomes leashed dogs.

A week later, the Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Play for Parks celebration takes over the John Welsh Memorial Fountain in West Fairmount Park on Friday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. The free evening includes live music, food trucks and a fireworks show that runs from 8:50 to 9 p.m. West Philadelphia rapper Chill Moody will present Moody’s Klubbhouse with a house band and special guests, with music starting at 7 p.m., according to the Conservancy.

The celebration marks the completion of the Conservancy’s five-year Fair Play Campaign, which raised and reinvested $115 million in Philadelphia parks and outdoor public programs. More than 2,700 donors contributed to the effort, according to PhillyVoice. During the event, the Conservancy will present Mayor Cherelle Parker with the John K. Binswanger Park Champion Award, recognizing her support for city parks and her service on the campaign committee.

For the park event, the meeting point is the John Welsh Memorial Fountain across from the Please Touch Museum in West Fairmount Park. Admission is free, though the Conservancy encourages attendees to RSVP in advance for event updates. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from local vendors, and colorful lights will illuminate the historic fountain.

Both weekends give visitors a reason to get outside before the weather turns. The market runs Oct. 9 through 11 at Dilworth Park, and Play for Parks follows on Oct. 16 in West Fairmount Park, with the fireworks finale at 8:50 p.m.
