30th Street Station Tops List of Busiest Amtrak Stations

Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station remains one of the busiest rail hubs in America, handling more passengers than all but a handful of stations nationwide, according to Amtrak’s latest ridership figures.

The station served about 4.9 million passengers in Amtrak’s 2024 fiscal year, making it the third-busiest station in the national system behind New York’s Moynihan Train Hall and Washington Union Station.

The Northeast Regional, Amtrak’s workhorse service between Boston and Washington, accounts for the bulk of the traffic. The faster Acela service also stops at 30th Street, connecting Philadelphia to New York in about 70 minutes and Washington in about two hours.

Ridership has rebounded strongly since the pandemic. Amtrak set a national ridership record in fiscal 2024 with 32.8 million customer trips, and the Northeast Corridor remains its most traveled route by far.

The station itself is in the middle of a long-term transformation. A multi-phase renovation program is modernizing the 1930s landmark, with upgraded retail, improved passenger areas and better connections to SEPTA and regional transit.

For travelers, the practical advice is familiar. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure, earlier during holidays. The main concourse boards most Northeast Regional trains, and the departure boards update track assignments about 10 minutes before boarding.

Parking near the station is limited and expensive. SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line, the subway-surface trolleys and multiple bus routes all serve 30th Street, and for most Center City travelers transit is faster than driving and parking.

Amtrak’s Keystone Service also connects 30th Street to Harrisburg and Lancaster, making the station the gateway for trips across Pennsylvania as well as up and down the East Coast.
