Trump Proclaims National Manufacturing Day and Credits Tariffs for Manufacturing Gains

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump issued a presidential proclamation declaring Oct. 2, 2026, as National Manufacturing Day, using the occasion to tout his administration’s tariff policies and recent tax legislation as key drivers of a domestic manufacturing resurgence.

In the proclamation, Trump pointed to key economic metrics, stating that the federal government has secured more than $11.2 trillion in domestic and foreign investments across the manufacturing, infrastructure, and technology sectors since his return to office. He also cited the addition of 112,000 factory construction workers and 72,000 new manufacturing jobs created in 2026.

“I have imposed powerful tariffs to protect American workers and businesses from unfair trade practices,” Trump said in the release, attributing the influx of factory construction and job growth to his administration’s “America First” agenda.

Trump also highlighted provisions under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which made the Small Business Tax Deduction permanent and allowed manufacturing firms to immediately expense 100 percent of investments in capital equipment, facility expansions, and domestic research and development. According to White House figures, the real annual wage for the average manufacturing worker has grown by $2,500 during his current term, alongside new tax exemptions for overtime pay.

Economic analysts note that while aggressive tariff enforcement and tax incentives have spurred short-term industrial investment and factory construction, global supply chain adjustments and elevated borrowing costs continue to present broader macroeconomic challenges for the sector.

The proclamation comes as international trade partners and foreign manufacturing hubs continue to monitor shifts in U.S. trade policy and trade barriers closely.
