The Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the oldest and largest high school regatta in the United States, returned for its 97th annual event this weekend, May 17-18, 2024.

Held on Philadelphia’s scenic Schuylkill River, this prestigious race has drawn high school rowing teams from across the United States and Canada, making it the largest youth regatta in the world.

The regatta course, spanning 1,500 meters, begins just north of the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and ends above the Columbia Railroad Bridge, where grandstands are set up for optimal viewing. The race weekend kicked off last Friday, followed by semi-finals and finals continuing through Saturday afternoon.

Semi-finals continue Saturday morning, starting at 8:00 am. Finals begin at 1 pm and the last race of the day is between 5-6 pm on Saturday.

Getting There and Parking

Spectators are encouraged to plan their travel ahead, as Kelly Drive, one of the city’s main arteries, will be closed between the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and Fountain Green Drive from Thursday through Saturday evening. Parking is available on the plateau above the racecourse in Fairmount Park, with shuttle buses providing transport to the regatta venue. Public transportation options include SEPTA Routes 32 and 38 to the Art Museum, with shuttles available from there to the racecourse.

Event Highlights

This year, nearly 1,000 boats took to the water, showcasing the talents of over 4,700 high school athletes from approximately 180 schools. The regatta is a key event in the scholastic rowing calendar, known for its competitive spirit and the high level of skill on display.

Spectator Information

Admission to the regatta is free, and spectators are welcome to bring well-behaved dogs on leashes. The best views are from the Kelly Statue and the grandstands at the finish line. With plenty of walking involved, comfortable shoes or bikes are recommended. Golf carts will be available to assist elderly and disabled attendees.

Food and Festivities

The Stotesbury Village will offer a variety of food and beverages, including local favorites like Philly cheesesteaks. Vendors will also be present, selling rowing gear and other merchandise.

In support of Philadelphia’s green initiatives, the regatta encourages all attendees to properly dispose of waste and keep the Schuylkill River clean. Smoking is prohibited in Fairmount Park to ensure a healthy environment for all.
