African Narratives Film Series to Spotlight Diverse African Stories in Philadelphia

Philly Talks

A unique cinematic experience is coming to Philadelphia as the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute, Center for Africana Studies, and Penn Global Documentary Institute present “African Narratives,” a film series celebrating African stories and voices. Scheduled for November 13, 2024, at The Rotunda on Walnut Street, the evening will feature three short films that delve into the resilience, culture, and identity of African communities, all created in collaboration with Penn students and FilmAid Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp film training program.

The November screening will spotlight the work of Penn alumna Jean Chapiro and FilmAid lead instructor Peter Decherney, who directed these powerful films alongside Penn and FilmAid students. The films—In the Language of Our Mothers, Is It Because I’m a Girl, and Echoes From Home—offer an intimate glimpse into the struggles and creativity of African communities, exploring themes of displacement, cultural identity, and self-expression.

Film Highlights

  • In the Language of Our Mothers tells the story of Sadia, a Masalit composer from Sudan now living in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Directed by Jean Chapiro, this film follows Sadia’s journey as she uses music to inspire and maintain the Masalit community’s cultural heritage. Her songs in the Masalit language help young refugees in Kakuma stay connected to their roots, their faith, and traditions.
  • Is It Because I’m a Girl, directed by Peter Decherney, profiles Nao.G, Kakuma’s first South Sudanese female hip-hop artist. Rising above family abuse and social challenges, Nao.G has created a supportive space for women in the camp through music and dance, empowering herself and others despite the limitations of camp life.
  • Echoes From Home, directed by Peter Gitau, showcases the lives of Burundi drummers in the Kakuma camp. This poetic documentary captures how the rhythms and traditions of their homeland help them sustain a sense of identity and cultural pride in an environment marked by hardship.

A Platform for African Filmmakers

This film series highlights the importance of both established and emerging African filmmakers in portraying diverse African experiences, as well as Penn’s ongoing commitment to supporting global storytelling through collaboration. The program provides a platform for African voices, especially those from marginalized and displaced communities, to share their stories with a broader audience.
