Commuters in Chester County are facing travel delays this week as PECO Energy begins a new phase of utility infrastructure improvements. The work, which officially launched on Tuesday, May 5, has led to heavy congestion along the Route 252 (Newtown Street Road) corridor.

Newtown Road Closure and Detours

According to Easttown Township offficials, Newtown Road is currently closed and detoured between Sugartown Road and Waterloo Road. This restriction is scheduled to remain in place through Monday, May 11.

The work follows a daily schedule designed to minimize overnight disruptions:

  • Weekdays: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Saturdays: 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Drivers are being rerouted via Saint Davids Road, Route 252 (Darby Paoli Road), and Sugartown Road. While local access is maintained for residents, PennDOT warns that significant backups are likely and advises motorists to allow for substantial extra travel time.

Broader Regional Impact

The Newtown Road project is part of a larger wave of utility maintenance affecting the area. Just north in Tredyffrin Township, crews recently conducted right -of- way clearing near Friendship Drive on Route 252 to facilitate equipment inspections.

Additionally, a long-term project in Media continues to shutter a portion of Route 252 (Providence Road) weekdays until June 2, further complicating north-south travel for those commuting between Chester and Delaware counties.

Staying Informed

Local authorities encourage residents to monitor real-time traffic conditions through the 511PA Traffic Center or by following the Tredyffrin Township Facebook page for the latest localized alerts.
