Eagles Running Back Room Thins as Barkley Goes Week to Week and Bigsby Heads to IR

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles are running out of healthy running backs. Saquon Barkley is considered week to week with a hamstring injury, backup Tank Bigsby is headed to injured reserve for core muscle surgery, and guard Cam Jurgens has entered the concussion protocol, all ahead of Sunday’s London game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Barkley hurt his hamstring on the second snap of Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Rams and did not return. The injury is not expected to be a long-term issue, according to NFL Network, but Barkley is unlikely to play Sunday in London, a source told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bigsby handled most of the workload after Barkley went down, carrying 14 times for 55 yards before he was hurt late in the game. He needs core muscle surgery and will miss at least four games on injured reserve, with hopes he can return in six weeks or less, NFL Network reported.

That leaves Will Shipley as the lone healthy running back on the active roster. The Eagles have Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Jaydon Blue on the practice squad, and one or more could be promoted or elevated for game day.

The offensive line took a hit as well. Jurgens, who had been filling in at left guard for the injured Landon Dickerson, self-reported concussion symptoms Monday and is in the protocol. Meanwhile the test results on Quinyon Mitchell’s hyperextended knee and Jonathan Greenard’s ankle remain unannounced; coach Nick Sirianni said the team would have more answers on Barkley around Wednesday.
