Philadelphia’s School Selection Window Opens Today. What Parents Should Do Now

PHILADELPHIA — The wait is over for Philadelphia families watching the school selection calendar. The School District of Philadelphia’s annual Find Your Fit application process opens today, Monday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. for the 2027-28 school year and closes Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 11:59 p.m., according to the district’s school selection page.

The opening follows a weeks-long delay. The process was originally scheduled to start Sept. 8, but Superintendent Tony Watlington pushed it back after verified state standardized test scores were held up at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. According to Chalkbeat, the district decided to wait so families would have official, verified assessment data when making school choices.

One key change softens the delay’s impact. Students may use PSSA and Keystone results from the past two school years in their applications, according to the district. Once the 2026 scores are verified and released by the state, district officials plan to contact applicants to help them submit the new results, with the release expected later this fall.

The eligibility rules have also shifted for this year’s cycle. According to reports on the superintendent’s announcement, applicants now need final grades in English language arts or reading, math and science for criteria-based schools. Social studies and writing grades were removed from the requirements. Families should check the specific criteria for each school on the district’s website, since schools are grouped by shared grade, attendance and test score requirements with additional school-specific steps.

Eighth-grade families feel the stakes most acutely. Chalkbeat reported that roughly 8,500 district eighth graders typically go through school selection each year, and this year’s test score delay left many families uncertain about where their students stand for magnet school admissions. One 13-year-old applicant told Chalkbeat she plans to tour about seven schools this fall and submit her top choices by the district’s November deadline.

For families just starting out, the district offers several supports during the application window. Application Assistance Labs are held at schools across the city, with hours and locations listed on the school selection website. The district also provides step-by-step how-to guides with language translations, recordings of school selection town halls, and a school search tool called Explore that gives details on each school.

Open houses remain one of the best ways to get a feel for a school. The district lists upcoming in-person and virtual open houses for criteria-based and citywide high schools. Attending a few of these before the Nov. 24 deadline can help families build a ranked list of choices grounded in real visits rather than reputation alone.

If questions come up during the process, families can contact the school selection team at schoolselect@philasd.org, according to the district’s school selection page. Families should also watch the district’s announcements for additional help sessions before the Nov. 24 close.
