Wawa Tests Sushi at Select Stores Near Its Delaware County Base
MEDIA, Pa. — Wawa built its reputation on hoagies. Now the Delaware County-based convenience chain is testing something unexpected in its grab-and-go cases: sushi.
The company confirmed it is piloting six cooked sushi rolls at select stores near its headquarters, the Inquirer reported. The rolls come from Sushi Soku, a brand of Hissho Sushi, which already supplies packaged sushi to Giant and Sprouts stores across the region.
The lineup includes a Philadelphia roll, a vegetable roll, a spicy shrimp crunch roll and California rolls in traditional, spicy and crunchy versions, according to the Inquirer. Each eight-piece package comes with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce and sells for about $9.
All six rolls are fully cooked. The Philadelphia roll skips raw fish in favor of cream cheese, imitation crab and avocado, the Inquirer reported.
The sushi has been spotted at stores in Media and Glen Mills in Delaware County and in Exton and West Chester in Chester County, according to customer posts and employee confirmations compiled by Delco.Today. Wawa has not said which stores are in the test or when it began, though customer videos on TikTok date back to at least late July.
A company spokesperson called the early response very favorable, with the crunchy and spicy rolls among the most popular, CBS News Philadelphia reported. In a statement, Wawa said it constantly tests new products to meet changing consumer needs and will evaluate feedback as the test wraps up to decide the product’s future.
Reactions from shoppers have been mixed. Some questioned whether sushi belongs at a convenience store, while others who tried free samples came away pleasantly surprised, R&B Philly reported.
The test marks another expansion of Wawa’s fresh-food ambitions beyond its signature hoagies and Sizzli breakfast sandwiches. The chain, headquartered in Delaware County, operates more than 1,000 stores across the East Coast. Whether sushi earns a permanent spot will depend on how the test performs in the coming months.
