UPenn Hosts “AI Month”: Exploring the Future of Youth Development and the Global Economy

Philly Talks

As Artificial Intelligence continues to redefine the global landscape, the University of Pennsylvania has launched “AI Month at Penn,” a month-long series of high-level discussions aimed at understanding the human impact of these rapid technological shifts.

A central highlight of the series is today’s online talk, GPN Speaker Series: Making Sense of Economic and Youth Development in the Age of AI,” hosted by the Penn Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) and the Global Possibility Network (GPN).

Navigating a New Economic Reality

The event brings together leading researchers and educators to address a pressing question: How can young people maintain their “agency” and sense of self in a workforce increasingly dominated by automated systems?

“We are moving beyond simple technical training,” says the event organizers. “The focus now must shift toward AI literacy—the ability to critically evaluate and ethically partner with AI to expand human potential, rather than be replaced by it.”

Key Themes of the Discussion

The talk focuses on three critical pillars for the “AI generation”:

  1. Identity Formation: Helping emerging adults build professional identities when the nature of “work” is constantly shifting.
  2. Developmental Readiness: Redefining what it means to be “career-ready” in an economy that values technical adaptability and emotional intelligence.
  3. Economic Equity: Investigating whether AI will bridge the gap for marginalized youth or create new barriers to social mobility.

A Campus-Wide Initiative

The GPN speaker series is just one part of a massive interdisciplinary effort at UPenn this April. Other major events include:

  • The 2026 Robotics Summit: A look at the next 25 years of physical AI.
  • Wharton’s Hack-AI-thon: Where students compete to build the next generation of AI-driven business solutions.
  • Fireside Chats: Featuring global tech leaders like Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, Yann LeCun.
